2008 Catholic Blog Awards Nominations Open Today

It must be Lent: the ashes, the fasting, the almsgiving, the prayer, the annual Catholic Blog Awards!

From the website:

"Nominations for the 2008 Catholic Blog Awards will open this year at 12:00 Noon CST on Friday, February 15, 2008 and close on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 12:00 Noon CST. Voting will begin on Monday, March 3, 2008 at 12:00 Noon CST and end on Monday, March 17, 2008 at Noon."

(Um, they do have a category for Funniest Catholic Blog....)

Lots of deserving folks out there: happy nominating and voting!

p.s. This contest is run annually by; give them a monetary tip to thank them. Also--does anyone have information about CatholiCon 2008? There is this website, and I heard of it on The Catholic Underground a few weeks ago, but otherwise I know nothing. I'm intrigued and curious....

I don't know about how you feel about this, but some of us are starting an insurrection.

Every year, certain "big blogs" which are professional (apologists, bloggers making money, etc) sweep all the top spots. We feel that this is against the spirit of the awards. The purpose of the awards is to recognize great Catholic bloggers...and many of them are unsung because of the ever present issue of popularity and sheep mentalit.

Yes, we're all sheep. But we're THINKING sheep, and quite honestly, the vast majority of readers comment mostly on blogs that are not known to the general population. This is sad.

In speaking for myself, I read mostly blogs of the average faithful Catholic, the average person who loves Christ and shares Him with the rest of us. Versus the big blogs that repost news, comment on the news, and in general, garner attention via snarking at the news.

So...join us, will you? Our only platform is to shun those "big blogs" that should, for the sake of honor, step aside, and let the awards be given to those to TRULY shine.

I can think of can you, I'm sure... How many of your regular commenters have awesome blogs...but don't have the recognition?

Let's make these awards what they were meant to be.

Adoro, I already did my nominating and put up quite a few underdogs, under the idea that they deserve recognition too, and the "big guys" will undoubtedly get recognition anyway.

I think it depends on what people want out of this gig, though. I mean, if people want to vote for one stop shopping blogs (reposted news, zillions of posts a day, etc.), go ahead. I suspect people are more attracted to the community that builds around those blogs than anything else, and that's not inherently bad. It's too bad that there isn't a system in place that has categories dependent on size of the blog (visitors per week, for example). That would help here. Or maybe people who won one year would not be eligible the next. I don't know. Glad I'm not in charge, and I'm grateful to those guys for doing it at all.

In any case, I'm not sure what "the spirit of the awards" are, but I do hope people pay some attention to the smaller quality blogs out there, of which there are many.

Hey Adoro--here's an idea. This is like the Oscars. You should create Sundance! The Catholic Blog Indies! ;)
