Truth Is Stranger #72: "O Angel Raphael, I really, really need a date."

From a recent Zenit article:

LONDON, FEB. 11, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Singles worried about spending the upcoming Valentine's Day by themselves are being encouraged to seek help through the prayers of an angelic matchmaker.

A Web site of the Catholic Enquiry Office, part of an agency of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, is encouraging Catholic singles to pray a novena to the Archangel Raphael.

Raphael is traditionally considered an ally in the realm of love and relationships thanks to the role he played in helping Sarah and Tobit in the Old Testament.

The book of Tobit explains how Raphael delivered Sarah from an evil spirit that had brought about the death of seven husbands on seven successive wedding nights.

Monsignor Keith Barltrop, director of the Catholic Enquiry Office, explained, "Many people have testified to the help they have received in finding a life partner through the prayerful help of the archangel. At this time of year, significant numbers are seeking someone special, or maybe dealing with recent heartbreak. St. Raphael is there to help."

Singles are being encouraged to join a novena starting Feb. 14...

Never underestimate the ingenuity of Catholics and our devotions to the Communion of Saints: "Raphael, if you could save Tobit's son from instant death in his marriage bed with the black widow Sarah, surely you can intercede to God to get me a date already."

I don't think it is a bad idea at all, but it made me smile. The website is here (warning: it speaks to you, so turn off the volume if you hate that).

It was not Tobit that was saved from death but his son Tobias who married Sarah.

Thanks for the catch, it's corrected now.

Does Raphael also prevent bad blind dates and eliminate creepy exes?

Okay, so back in 1992, a friend resolved to have a boyfriend by Valentine's Day, and I decided to try it too. I asked St. Raphael to help because he's always been very good to me. I gave him a list of the guys I thought were decent prospects. There were about seven guys.

Within the next two days, two guys removed themselves from the list (ie, dating other people or whatever) and by February 2nd, I was dating the nice guy from church choir.

That nice guy and I have been married 12 years now and are having our 5th baby. I owe St. Raphael big time.

Woo hoo! Great story, Jane!

So... asking King Solomon for dating advice would be a bad idea?

Allen--I think "unwise" is the word you're looking for.

I'll send you the prayer that Flannery O'Connor references in her letters...

Prayer to St. Raphael, Angel of Happy Meetings

O Raphael, lead us towards those we are waiting for, those who are waiting for us! Raphael, Angel of Happy Meetings, lead us by the hand towards those we are looking for! May all our movements, all their movements, be guided by your Light and transfigured by your joy.

Angel guide of Tobias, lay the request we now address to you at the feet of Him on whose unveiled Face you are privileged to gaze. Lonely and tired, crushed by the separations and sorrows of earth, we feel the need of calling to you and of pleading for the protection of your wings, so that we may not be as strangers in the Province of Joy, all ignorant of the concerns of our country.

Remember the weak, you who are strong--you whose home lies beyond the region of thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene, and bright with the resplendent glory of God.
Amen.
