Italian Catholics Jealous of Irish Oppression

In a potentially ugly scene, a handful of Italian Catholics picketed the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade earlier today.

Those picketing numbered around 30, bearing various placards and signs stating "The Irish get all the good parades," "Viva Italia," "St. Maria Goretti can beat up St. Paddy anyday," and "The end is near" (although the person holding the last sign apparently joined the picketers for good company)....

One of my favorite re-runs, since I'm both Irish and Italian.  The rest is here.

I am allowed to enjoy this too. Not only am I the descendant of such Irish names as Riordan, Malone, Burke and Lalor, but I am also a descendant of some very Italian sounding names like Scettrini and Scilacci. The latter actually come from Ticino in Southern Switzerland...but hey, they still spoke Italian!

I love the pot of spaghetti! I don't think there is any Italian in my blood but the Irish/Italian mixing has shown its influence in the form of making my Mom and wife both makers of very good Italian food.

On a little more serious note, the reason the Irish have such a great parade here in Philly is because they have refused to change the name of the parade to The Irish Parade (or something even worse) in order to get city funding. Many other groups dropped their patron saint's names from their parades in order to get that money. Probably not a good way to garner a saint's intercessory prayers!

My bloggy pal Helen sent me here. I'm an Italian married to an Irishman. I loved this!

Thanks for the smile.

I've decided that my soul is Celtic (I have Irish, Scottish, and probably Welsh ancestors), but my taste buds are Italian! Gimme some pasta, tomato sauce, and cheese, and I'm a happy little Mick :)

Verification word: heedi. That means you're paying attention :)

Well, the flags of both Italy and Ireland have green, white, and orange, and it's easy to get lazy...
But then, this is coming from the girl who used to confuse Austria and Australia, India and Indiana, Vienna, Venice, and Vietnam.
