Is it an idol or an icon? I would argue that idolatry is in the eyes of the beholder. If the viewer/user stops at the device itself, then I agree that it is an idol. If however, the viewer/user is seeing through the device to loved ones who reflect God's presence in the world, the actions of the Holy Spirit in the world, or the promise of eternal life, then I argue instead that it is an icon.
Eileen, when its my students fiddling with facebook during class supposedly "checking the time" (ignoring the big clock on the wall), its an idol. I'm standing by that story. :)
Somebody made the mistake of writing down one of the major Unwritten Rules of Society, and this is unforgivable.
