Friday's QOTD

As a Catholic Minnesotan....

(FYI, anonymous Politico-man above isn't a member of one party or the other. You know, that suit works for any given member of any political party, right? Why would that be offensive to any public servant? Can't imagine. Touchy politicians, sheesh....)*

As Fr A.D. suggested on the facebook, one of the best reactions to this anti-Catholic hulabaloo is to pray for them. And as Ray does in charity, point out the error. That's what I'm trying to do above as well....

My last "pain in the tuckus" post, wrapped in a miracle

(Humor blogging resumes soon. I promise. I've got two in the hopper.)

OK: all of my friends, and most of my fb buds and blog audience, agree I have been a royal pain in the tuckus. I have taken lessons from PBS on fundraising and and have done everything but offer the IC mug for your contribution of $10 a month to Reece's Rainbow and Tori's special needs adoption (hmmmmmm?...nah).

But here's the miracle, people: when a woman (then unknown to me) and I began to separately but simultaneously fundraise for Tori--a 5 yr old girl from Eastern Europe with CP who needed a family immediately--things began to happen. Yes, we raised some money for sure. We apparently also raised some hopes. And we don't know how it happened, but between our feeble efforts and (apparently) a significant anonymous grant, her adoption fund, which was at $1000 October 1, shot up to $23,516. That's fully funded, people. And without a family commitment, it's almost unheard of.

A family, who had adopted three other special needs children from this same country in the past year, had been pining for Tori for six months. But they were financially wiped from the previous adoption. They saw the combined effort and growing hope that Tori may get funding and adoption...and they decided to go out on a limb and commit. When they decided this, they logged on to the computer--and Tori's fund had just jumped to fully funded status.

There's more to this, but you get the idea. This isn't my work, people. It's GOD work. It was a miracle. And Tori and her future parents still need prayers--the adoption isn't final until she's out of there with everything signed. But her future has more hope than it has in years. Now, she HAS a future.

OK, so I had promised God I would try to go as all out as I can (i.e. be a royal pain in the tuckus) to fundraise for one month, all October (Respect Life month!). And Tori is on her way to getting adopted and out of the institution she is trapped in now. Earlier in the month, I planned a Fun Run honoring special needs adoption, which is in full swing now--October 30th if you're in my town! The Fun Run money, and anything we fundraise this week, is going to another child in Eastern Europe with CP, needing a family: Anthony. He needs help no less than Tori did--he is the age where children age out of the orphanage system and often suffer badly because of it. It's especially hard on children who cannot walk (and he cannot). Many children die in these conditions. So I ask, one last time, if Tori got funded before you could help...please help little Anthony. We can make a difference: I know of two grants going to Anthony and his future family to the total of $6000, so can we raise another $4000? Whew. You can visit the Help for Tori page and donate, or read more about Anthony and our efforts.

Every dollar helps. Reece's Rainbow is run entirely by very dedicated volunteers, so all the money (except Paypal fees) goes to the child's adoption fund, to be given to parents who commit to adopting the child to help cover international adoption costs. It is also a 501c3 org, in case you want to make a tax deduction. Thank you and God bless! If you cannot help, please spread the word, because we need to find Anthony's future parents and the more people who know about this, the more quickly that will happen!

Truth Is Stranger #114: Investor sues Bible.com for lack of profit

Neighbor, can you say "mammon"? I knew you could!

WILMINGTON, Delaware (Reuters) – A shareholder of Bible.com Inc sued the company's board members, accusing the ordained ministers of failing to profit from the "goldmine" potential of the namesake Internet property, according to a lawsuit.

James Solakian filed the lawsuit in Delaware's Chancery Court against the board of Bible.com for breaching their duty by refusing to sell the site or run the company in a profitable way....

The company's business plan stated "it is the goal of the board of directors of Bible.com to become very, very profitable," according to court documents. The business was also to be governed in accordance with Christian business principles.

Truth Is Stranger #113: Tree-sus

Man Sees Jesus in Sawed Tree Trunk

Since this demands a riff of some sort:
  • Tree-sus, thank you Mr. Reporter, isn't bad.
  • The Tree of Life?
  • The Joshua Tree?
  • The Tree of the Fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Jesus?
  • I learned about panentheism in school, but I didn't think it looked like this.

--By the way, I love how this is inspiring our lumberjack to go to Church more often. I'll be the very first to grant the Lord works in mysterious ways, but I want to be there for that altar call.

Help for Tori continues. There's been a lot of good out of this--good conversations and conscience-raising around town, people working on this benefit together who normally don't collaborate, etc. And between two bloggers, I believe we're at $4000. But she really needs much more. Please consider it. Thanks.

Friday's QOTD

The Church is intolerant in principle because she believes; she is tolerant in practice because she loves. The enemies of the Church are tolerant in principle because they do not believe; they are intolerant in practice because they do not love.

Tori's Birthday

You want to kick in the doors of evil with me?

Today is Tori's birthday--the little girl I've blogged, blegged, begged, and prayed about--and she turns five. But she turns five in a mental institution for adults. Her only "problem" is that she has CP, and her home country considers her written off.

We need to show everyone that every child is a wanted child--that there are parents who would love to raise Tori--but cannot afford the international adoption costs. We can do this by giving Tori (and her future parents) the gift of a fully funded adoption. A birthday gift of a dollar or two or more would be the best gift!

She is listed at Reece's Rainbow. The community of faithful moms who advocate for these special needs children in eastern Europe is grieving over the death of one of the orphans there, a girl named Anne Marie (Anya). This is not uncommon--these children do not get treatment because they are written off. A few of the advocating moms are saying, in memory of Anne Marie, they are determined to pray and find a way for little Tori. Please join us. Please make a birthday gift for Tori today!

From Dave:
"I heard the honk of a horn and a smell as of burning rubber. Then Michael, the Archangel, came pealing 'round the corner with his heavenly vanguard, and a third of the cars were swept from the street."

What to do today? Perhaps...win an Ipod Touch?

It's possible...through this giveaway, if you donate for Tori at Stephanie's site. Her donations run ends October 21, and the IPod will be be given away to someone randomly selected from you good-hearted donors (if you donate at HER site!).

The fact that there is a woman out there who began a campaign the very same time I did for Tori, which neither of us knowing, says to me God is at work in this. I'm fine with more money going through her chip-in--It's all going to the same place! Local folks, we're doing a "fun run walk and roll" around one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes (one of the smaller ones) as a fundraiser October 30th. Look for it! In the meantime, you non-local folks--if you can spare a dollar, it will make a difference!

p.s. the chip-in total has been wrong for three days--it's a problem with the widget, not the program. We have about double that amount for Tori now, and dear friends told me they were making a very, very big donation today directly to Reece's Rainbow. We're moving! Keep praying, spreading the word, looking for Tori's parents!

I thought it was pretty hysterical on its own, but maybe it would make a good caption contest as well?
