SOUTH BEND, Ind. (CNS) -- Can modern technology help strengthen our faith? Some techno-savvy Catholics from South Bend think so.
In his message for the 2011 World Communications Day, Pope Benedict XVI said it's not enough to just "proclaim the Gospel through the new media," but one must also "witness consistently." The developers of "Confession: A Roman Catholic App" for Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch think their product helps people do both.
Brothers Patrick and Chip Leinen and their friend Ryan Kreager said feedback has been positive. The app, reportedly the only one with an imprimatur, is designed to help people make a better confession.

I bought the app, and I think it is fantastic. One of the areas it addresses is how to get out of the habit of giving the "shopping list" confession. I have also been mulling over how to give a more mature and adult sounding confession; I guess I live a relatively "quiet" life, and so I have been bothered that my confessions still sound like the type I gave in back when I was in grade school. This app helped illustrate ways to make a more meaningful and less perfunctory confession.
Honestly this is a great idea. As a minister to high school and college students, this would be a great tool to pass on. Using tech is a great way to get through to teens and young adults. I currently use iBreviary for the office and readings and have several teens that use it each week before mass. Adding a Reconciliation app to that would be wonderful. Only question - when is a driod-based version going to be available.
